MEGAN WILLIAMSON : FOLDED SPACE

Megan Williamson’s exhibition, Folded Space, presents paintings of landscapes from Umbria, Italy, alongside select paintings of fallen fabric. One might question the association of images, but the intention is to explore the notion of perception and the golden thread between the fabric of nature and the nature of fabric.

"What my Italian landscape and fabric paintings have in common is they both come out of my fascination with folding space. They are done on vastly different scales, but how I named the spaces and followed the arabesques in and out of figuration are so related that I don’t think I could have done one without the other."

In these abstract paintings, the notion of perception takes on a transformative role, guiding how one interacts with and interprets the subject. Unlike representational art, which aims to depict recognizable images, Williamson’s works prioritize emotional experience over literal depiction.

Her ability to disrupt a flat surface to create dynamic tensions make her paintings feel alive. In doing so, she excels in capturing the feeling and essence of vastly different subjects through rhythm, color and movement, thus creating thought-provoking pictures that offer unexpected levels of analysis. This shift challenges our perception and questions our assumptions about what a painting can be.
